Responding to the Manchester Attack

When silence was not an option.

In October 2025, as Jewish communities marked Yom Kippur, a terror attack targeted Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester — quickly becoming a national news story and triggering widespread concern across the UK.

At the time, JPR had already distributed a forthcoming research report under embargo. Recognising its immediate relevance to the unfolding story, I made the decision to lift the embargo and reposition the report as part of the live news cycle.

I followed up directly with journalists, reframing the research in light of the attack and ensuring it could inform ongoing coverage rather than sit outside it. The findings were subsequently quoted across major national and international outlets, including Reuters, AFP, The Guardian, The Times, BBC and ITV News, and referenced in high-profile commentary — including an op-ed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The shift from a planned release to real-time intervention led to a sharp and measurable increase in engagement. In the week following the attack, website users rose by over 400%, page views by more than 250%, and report downloads doubled compared to weekly averages. Google Search performance also significantly exceeded baseline levels, reinforcing JPR’s position as a highly visible and trusted source of information on Jewish life in the UK.

ceases to be serious when people laugh
